No laurel-resting for Marco Rodrigues aka Photonz, one of the most constant boundary-pushers and clever tune makers to have graced the often unvarying techno game in recent memory. This time, the Lisbon-born, London-based producer steps up on Skylax Records sister imprint Cosmic Club with ‘Memories of Burma‘, a fiery four-tracker set for landing by the end of the month.
Photonz has been one of the few to carve out an immediately identifiable signature sound, steering his ship deftly whilst showing a detailed attention to the future-readiness of his tracks. ‘Memories of Burma‘ doesn’t fail at pursuing this aim to break open the last bolts to padlock tropical sounds, satin deep house and mind-expanding lysergic tech beats from one another.
Our pick, the EP’s hectic closer ‘Stealth Predator‘ is perhaps one of the finest examples of Rodrigues’ multi-vector approach – working a heavily syncopated mashup of scalding batucada-like rhythms, organic sound components, clanging percs and gummy synth stabs. The sonic equivalent to John McTiernan’s creature hunting a human prey amidst jungle landscapes as indistinct shapes flash by in thermal vision. Don’t look back.
Memories of Burma is released via Cosmic Club on 28th February, pre-order a vinyl copy from Juno.
