Drawing from the pulse of his youth spent in the stark, brutalist cityscape of Minsk, London-based producer Ilya Gurin-Babayeu channels his energy into ‘GAME-O’ – a genre-defying narrative, weaving together heavyweight techno and the disorienting complexities of avant-garde footwork.
The EP title ‘GAME-O‘ — short for both ‘game-oriented’ and ‘game over’ — captures Ilya’s unique approach to blending intuition with the idea of creative practice as a game. Album opener, ‘Back to Step 1′, serves as a captivating entry point into this universe, setting off on an intergalactic journey aboard a distant spaceship, drifting through the eerie expanse of forgotten dreams and unraveling a fevered, space-time delirium that pushes the limits of sound design. The track begins with celestial reverberations and lo-fi textures, evoking the hum of arcade games – a sonic detritus that mirrors the afterglow of a disintegrating future.
As the track progresses, it plunges into the depths of intricately crafted trip-hop rhythms. Hypnotic, laser-like oscillations slice through the composition, while fragmented vocal snippets and ghostly textures coalesce into a tense, otherworldly soundscape that lingers like an elusive dream, long after the final reverberations dissipate into the void.
