Premiere: Circadian Rhythms – Systematic Soul

Walrus’ praised vinyl only label Basic Moves prepare to release their final double 12-inch courtesy of local legend and all time Belgian underground hero Christophe De Groot aka Circadian Rhythms.

Launched in 2017 by Michiel Claus aka Walrus, Basic Moves have released a multitude of genre hopping platters – spanning deep house and jungle via house and techno – from a smattering of local artists including Dana Kuehr, Tone Scientist, Signal Kommt, Caustic 14, Dj.Booth, Spanky Rodgers and Walrus.

Serving up the final piece of the puzzle, ‘Basic Moves 20′ is said to be “a sonic witness of Christophe De Groot’s first musical encounters with his machines, revealing a withdrawn selection of six bedroom patchwork tracks produced between the years of ‘93 & ’99, a time without easy access to user manuals or the internet to help you solve the riddles of technology.”

Indeed there is a particular DIY dexterity to this double pack, sounds spanning squelching acid, muffled 808 kicks, skewered techno, sinewed synth-work and jazz piano. Our pick from the album is ‘Systematic Soul‘ thanks to its bubbling drum patterns, black wave synths and Detroit-styled vocals. The vocal sample adds grittiness to the track, resonating like Richard Davis spooky sci-fi ambient track ‘Methane Sea‘ (1978).

‘Basic Moves 20’ is scheduled for release on 4th October via Basic Moves. Order a vinyl copy from Bandcamp.
