In the wake of some solid releases by London vibist Henry Wu and label head Pablo Valentino, MCDE return this summer with the debut incursion of Parisian producer Hugo LX, ‘Desiderata‘ EP, due for release July 4. Entering LX’s soulful musical realm, built around nostalgic ambiences, breezy melodies and softly jazzed-up rhythms, a brief spin is enough to understand Hugo Lascoux comes within the scope of the lascivious, funk-indebted French deep house tradition, following on the heels of producers such as Pépé Bradock and Brawther with poise and style.
With a back catalogue that already counts an album for Chez Damier’s Balance Recordings and EPs on R2 Records, Mona Musique, Jazzy Couscous and now MCDE, the Frenchman’s career is clearly on the upward path. Lifted from ‘Desiderata‘, our pick ‘Dee‘ finds LX orchestrating a lavish choral movement, blending in a fine mixture of emotional strings, bleepy synthlines, infectious sub-bass and a vaporous jazz swing – even allowing himself to dip toes into a broader ambient-like quiet on a few occasions. A total cracker of a tune, sure to floodlight the darkest of nights.
Desiderata EP is released via MCDE on 4th July, pre-order a copy from Juno.
