Japanese record label Totem Traxx prepare to unveil ‘Dub Animals‘, the latest long-player from French-British producer Sebastian Russell.
Known for his distinct contributions to Vilnius-based area127, Laurent Garnier’s Cod3qr, and Tustance, Sebastian Russell returns with nine tracks steeped in dub-heavy machinery. Rooted in the shadowy basements of East London for nearly two decades, he now ventures into the glowing nights of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, fusing downtempo psychedelia, slo-mo trance and dub techno into a simmering cauldron.
Our pick, ‘Jungle Pareidolia‘, submerges the listener into a swirling vortex of pre-industrial mysticism. It’s as if ancient rituals are resurrected in the undisturbed expanse of forgotten mangroves, where Russell’s drum programming warps the mind like a trance-infused cinematic pause in the throes of ego death.
A dynamic, drunken rhythm dances alongside the rhythmic pulse of the canopy, while trance-laden oscillations set the atmosphere ablaze. As the track unfurls, a delirious blend of tension-filled bells and ethereal chants calls forth something primal – beckoning the listener into the very heart of the panacea.
