Belgian record label Viernulvier set the stage for ‘The Loom of Longing‘, an otherworldly debut album from Ghent-based singer-songwriter and composer Nele De Gussem, bolstered with a kaleidoscopic music video for ‘Wonder‘ reminiscent of 90’s video game aesthetics.
Renowned for her collaborative work with avant-garde outfits including BRNS, Future Old People are Wizards and supergroup Uma Chine, Gussem now emerges solo, weaving 8-tracks of alchemical nature. Psyched-out electronica flirts with neoclassical modular currents, conjuring a dreamlike interplay that dissolves boundaries between avant-garde pop and post-folk experimental.
Visual artist Victor Verhelst amplifies this auditory labyrinth, crafting a unique collage of 90s computer game-inspired motion graphics, glitched medieval fortresses and pixelated underwater fauna, which has an otherworldly appeal and highly symbiotic relationship with the music.
“For me, videos and movies are moments that imply the possibility of everything coming together, all at once. For Wonder, I was inspired by old video games that serve as portals to other worlds. I wanted to create my own symbolism—symbols that gain meaning through their use, and through context. For example, one can see portals, doors, stairs, and stars. By using them in specific ways, they evoke mystery and establish a visual language, perhaps even a form of dialogue with the viewer.” Victor Verhelst
‘The Loom Of Longing’ is scheduled for release on 21st February. Order a limited edition vinyl copy from Bandcamp.
