Inaugurated last year with a choice slab from Joel Shanahan under his Golden Donna moniker, shortly followed by Brazilian artist Zopelar, Madison-based label Yugen Records finally break 2018 in with B. Hayes‘ anticipated debut solo 12″, ‘Laurine‘, due out on 19th October.
At just 22, the LA-based talent has already amassed quite an impressive experience for his young age. Founder of These Things Take Time – which we’ve already featured on IA in the past, DJ, producer, but also an experienced DIY party promoter who’s honed his skills at Chicago dance institution Smart Bar, Hayes now steps up to expose the breadth of his abilities as a deep house tune-maker, which you may’ve already caught a glimpse of on TTTT’s excellent ‘Time 003‘ VA.
Our pick, the celestially vibrant ‘Ovation‘ makes for an ideal introduction into Hayes’ finely brushed melodic canvases and otherworldly atmospheres. Groovy and contemplative in equal measure, the track is a blissed-out journey across lavish submarine dreamscapes, where neon-coloured coral lungs pulse with a vivid secret life. Just let its wistful chords, punchy bass stabs and steady swing take you for a deep dive in the great blue. Wistful oneiric melter in full effect.
Laurine is released via Yugen Records on 19th October, pre-order a copy from Bandcamp.
