Since his beginnings back in 2014, Italian producer Filippo Colonna Romano aka Modula has been laying the foundations to an unexampled musical universe made of buoyant funk and spacious kosmische scapes, that came to fruition in the classiest way on his debut LP, the excellent ‘Autostrada Galattica‘, released earlier this year on Bordello A Parigi.
Back in this end of summer to treat us with further cosmic-disco grooves and a bit more than just that, Modula steps up on Danish outlet Tartelet Records with a much singular outing.
Imagined as a triptych presenting the sounds of nature under a morphing light, ‘Alba, Tempesta, Notturno – A Tropical Journey’ opens with an original chunk of field recordings from the tropical jungles of South America, revamped through audio synthesis into an oddball slice of bloopy electronics and eventually giving way to the EP’s vanishing point i.e. the closing 12-minute track, ‘Musical Journey’.
Streaming in full via our channels today, this long-haul sonic odyssey across drippy leaves and murmuring canopies oozes retro synth-funk from head to toe with its lusher-than-lush slap bass chords, sun-kissed Rhodes stabs and subtle tribal percs emerging from beyond tall walls of vegetation and fantasized waterfalls. When the sun begins to go down and the light attires itself in luscious gold nuances, you know it’s time to let the funk speak, and Modula’s got plenty of that.
Alba – Tempesta – Notturno “A Tropical Journey” is released via Tartelet Records on 5th September, pre-order a copy from Bandcamp.
