Greek producer odpein present their latest release “Someone Meant It”, packed to the rafters with manic yet cohesive electro-infused rhythm. Their first full EP release since 2023, odpein has accrued a cult following in recent years, through the performance of live sets in their home town of Athens – featuring on To Pikap’s ‘Remember the Future’ series (“Badass Memories” found on Part Two), and through their own events series, Stiff n’Loose.
“Grief” serves as the penultimate track on the EP – a high-energy, high-performance, hyper taste of the electro sound prevalent throughout the project. Standing at 3 minutes 36 seconds, the piece is a short but sweet look into odpein’s breadth of live compositional expertise – appearing almost as a snapshot from one of many live sets over the last few years. The track’s snappy and frenetic drum section features heavy mid-range percussion, substituting in for the use of rapid hi-hats in electro patterns that often become harsh and all consuming.
Swimming around the beat is a host sweet treats for the listener; concise and classic Rhodes Electronic Piano stabs, a cyclical sequencer, gated pads, mechanical bleeps and bloops – all having their time in the limelight as the work develops. Their intricately designed placement is especially important as odpein refrains from using any discernible central melody throughout the piece, instead leaving the listener to create their own through the lattice of melodic elements.
