Over the last few years, the ’80s nostalgic, plastic-enclosed magnetic tape we like to call cassette has enjoyed a sizeable resurgence, as evidenced by the increasing amount of up-and-coming labels using its cheap, easy-to-make attributes as a springboard before upgrading to the more widely-appreciated, hence more pricey, piece of black wax.
Kommando Records is one of these exciting, to-be-monitored promises. Surfacing from the banks of the Rhine, the not so aptly-named imprint doesn’t lapse into any sort of martial approach or brutal, belligerent sound aesthetic as its appellation may invite you to imagine.
Said to focus on “experimental and soulful House and Techno music“, the Cologne imprint debuts with a finespun four-track piece of crystalline deep-house soundscapes and subtly-balanced ambientisms, courtesy of Simon Heinz and Ruben List, each one occupying a side of his own.
Today we’re glad to bring you the exclusive stream of Simon Heinz’s hypnotic house mantra ‘Mask‘: a lifting contemplation entwining soft-as-pillow pads and washed-out piano stabs in sleek, suspended motion. A thing of beauty.
Unknown EP is released via Kommando Records on March 11th, order a copy from Bandcamp.
