Chicago-based modal organ maestro Jimmy Lacy is set to unveil his latest sonic odyssey as Sip on Not Not Fun.
With origins in a Logan Square cocktail lounge residency, Lacy explores groovy, spaced out keyboard adventures. His 2020 release ‘Leos Natural‘ was an excellent encapsulation of the project thus far, diving deep into a chill out aesthetic that’s suited less for drugged out green rooms than it is for sun-soaked garden walks.
Outside of a collaborative EP with Pete Prezzano in 2021, the last few years have been spent tending to his growing family and slowly chipping away at a new SiP release. The wait is over, as Lacy has partnered again with Not Not Fun on a sprawled out yet focused collection, ‘Leos Ultras’, described as “a technicolor slideshow of keys, clarinet, kalimba, sax, melodica, flute, tambourine, and drumbox”.
Our pick for today’s premiere is “Hard Times“, a bright slice of psychedelia that’s a slow burn mix of melodica, organ, and a driving, mellow Motorik-lite beat. As with the rest of the Sip catalog, “Hard Times” brings out a playful spirit ideal for exploratory listening sessions. You can sip a cup of your favourite warm beverage or use it as a soundtrack for a mellow night at home. Whatever your listening environment, “Hard Times“, and the rest of ‘Leos Ultras’, are an engrossing guide to Sip’s grooved out sonics.
‘Leos Ultras’ is scheduled for release on 1st November via Not Not Fun. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
