Milan-based record label Alzaya continues to push the boundaries of the unexpected with ‘Yokai Parade‘, the latest offering from Italian producer Volantis, joined by the ethereal voices of Hiroko.
Inspired by ghostly, twilight train rides across the Kansai region in Japan, ‘Yokai Parade‘ materialises as a mesmerising bridge between the structural elements of Western dance music and the abstract spirit of Japanese poetry. Over two immersive tracks, Volantis crafts an audio experience that pulses like an arcade of neon-lit italo-disco treasures, gently laced with acid-tinged slow burners enriched by two remixes from Eden Burns and Slow Motion king-pin, Fabrizio Mammarella.
Our pick is Eden Burns‘ take on ‘Yokai Parade‘ – a spectral reimagining that opens with Hiroko’s space-echoed vocals, reverberating like a superlunary conversation between ancestors and the spectral forces that haunt the rails. It’s a track that both unsettles and invites, as carefully layered percussion and deep-rooted kick-drums carve through the atmosphere, while Volantis’ slithering, acid-bent basslines snake their way through the mix. Chiming cowbells and warped synth signals pull this remix deeper into the unknown, where FX-laden samples and growing tension guide the listener on an elusive ascent, riding the rails of an uncharted consciousness.
‘Yokai Parade’ EP is scheduled for release on 14th March via Alzaya Records. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
