Never have enough of Hassan Abou Alam’s raw percussive cuts and woozy basslines atop purely addictive Egyptian rap. Cairo’s infectious underground beat technician, Alam, pops out his fifth extended player to the abyss Shalfata of mainly freaky floor heaters, shooting straight to the blood, definite to take chunks out of bank balances, going hard for that sweet & sweaty club murk.
A YUKU Prague essential drop, Shaflata translates to “Messy, splattered, sloppy“, writes the artist beneath his album listing on Bandcamp and righteously loads tight breaks and bass, a certified wobble to the knees. Take a trip with the 8-track show, four straight servings of Alam himself, and four more tasty by hand-picked collaborators.
Going ape-shit, ‘Mage in a Rage‘ is prickly machine funk, twisted distorting vocals and under it rumbling strong big scores of low-end bass. Another dose of tremble runs a rhythmic mile on “Te3ebt“, a volatile revolving synth beaconing the act, electronic bleeps, plus a cherry on top, the timely switch to some Middle Eastern drum action for adult only fantasies.
A “Mawgood” trifecta adds more of everything: a solo rendition by Alam, including two extended remixes, one hazy, acidic take by Joaquin Cornejo reminiscent of a sublime warmth, while another conjured for the dark basement allure by TRAKA, steaming all over, glitching whips of synth, robot talk, and, of course, more bass for the restless. In pursuit, Zuli adds a total screeching brain-melter edit of “Te3ebt” chords slash like a tightrope, dirty obscure electronica for the soul.
‘Shaflata‘ pumps heavy for hard nights indoors, or out – and even for an energised kickoff with morning coffee if you dare. Bass-face and gun-fingers guaranteed, a totally un-skippable Hassan Abou Alam production – enjoy!
