A couple months ago San Francisco-based imprint Public Release landed their first transmission of the year: a fine remix EP for New York’s Earth Boys featuring reworks from label regulars T&P (aka Lauer and Sweeney), Italians Do It Better boss Mike Simonetti and Canadian Riviera’s expert vibist Khotin, who’s now making his return to Eugene Whang’s roster with the supa fresh ‘Aloe Drink‘.
Like its title suggests, the present batch metes out four organically-grown chill house groovers, both mildly bracing and revitalising as can be; recommended for when the scorching sun’s turning the city into an open-air oven. Title cut ‘Aloe Drink‘ finds the Vancouver producer unraveling a languid summer daydream where the subtle, rousing pulse of bongos leads the way across luxuriant coastal paths and further spacious deep blue oceanscapes.
There, Khotin’s sure-handed touch makes all the difference, as he forges a tune right in line with his hometown’s imposing musical heritage but allows himself to digress into unmapped territories, halfway micro-house minimalism, biotic ambient and understated acidic grounds. On remix duty the one and only Force Of Nature – aka Japanese producers DJ Kent and KZA – dish out a more dancefloor-oriented affair, fleshing out the drumwork and bass, whilst preserving the original’s crucial bloom beautifully.
Flip the record over and the weirdly rejoicing ‘Friend‘ harnesses a different kind of energy, playfully melding stealth sub-bass movements, altered vox samples and widescreen pads smoothly expanding to further emotional, ethereal spheres. Letting out the teeming spirits sleeping under the previous cuts’ sleek, satiny surfaces, ‘Strange Plant‘ travels fascinating trancey audio expanses, fusing a wide-spanning battery of elements and FXs to immerse you in an almost gooey swamp of textures, surrounded by oddball sounds that could well range from rutting robot frogs to digitally-rendered bird of paradise calls… Time for you to take a dip.
