Hunter P. Thompson utilizes his many aliases, notably Akasha System, to explore the connection between nature and machine. Whether it’s finely grooved out eco-house or mind bending synth journeys, the Tampa based musician’s sound reflects the mossy forests of the Pacific Northwest and the humid swamps of Florida, the former his previous home base and the latter his current locale.
His latest project, Tegu, opened up a new realm of vaporised ambient Everglade dub on January’s ‘Forest Hills’, and continues to broaden its horizon with ‘Owl Island’, his second cassette of the year for Not Not Fun. The album features further explorations of field recordings, hypnotic rhythm tracks, and gently pulsating synths, along with cameos from like-minded wanderers X.Y.R and Wave Temples.
Our pick for today’s premiere is “2×12“, featuring fellow Floridian producer Wave Temples. Utilising a mesmeric drum pattern and woozy keys, the collaboration is absolute gold. It combines the best elements of each artist while seamlessly blending a new sound that’s equal parts long lost star map and terrestrial beacon into a bold new soundscape. Tune out the chaos of the news and social media and escape into the lush, serene garden of “2×12” and Tegu’s vision that’s laid out brilliantly on ‘Owl Island’.
‘Owl Island’ is scheduled for release 18 October via Rhizome. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
