For the second edition of Dekmantel x Grolsch ‘Sole Selector‘ series of 2016 we headed to Switzerland to hang out with Bern-based DJ and selector Sassy J with the aim of finding out more about her local surroundings, early years’ learning in a music-loving family and discover what makes her tick today.
In the film Sassy J’s mother Jacqueline and close friends Kat and Marc each express the qualities that make up Judith’s unique character and singular approach to her art. Sassy J welcomes us into her quiet home in Bern, rich with personality and self made expressionism through the art on her walls, the records in her collection and the hand-crafted patchworks that she sews onto thrift shop garments, symbolising her Patchwork Clubnight and the guests and legends that have performed at her nights including MF Doom, Moodymann, Onra, Theo Parrish, Wbeeza, Gilles Peterson and Floating Points.
Other locations include her friend Kat’s trailer park on the outskirts of Bern and her friend Marc’s record den in the city as well as her mother’s. We also visited the Botanical Gardens in Bern and drove to the mountains of Turtmanntal, one of her regular childhood hikes where she can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and reconnect with nature.
