Having previously brought their worlds-converging music to the ever picky tables of The Trilogy Tapes and Permanent Vacation, Carl Gari, alias the enigmatic trio formed by fellow Munich-based producers Jonas Yamer, Till Funke and Jonas Friedlich, recently resurfaced on Whities with their anticipated third EP, ‘The Act Of Falling From The 8th Floor‘, a six-tracker conceived along with Egyptian singer and trumpeter Abdullah Miniawy – their second joint sortie after ‘Darraje‘ in 2016.
To accompany the release, the guys asked German visual artist Justin Urbach to take on the compellingly deep, ‘Haj حاج‘ – a slo-burning merger of soulful arabic incantations and brooding dub atmospherics. Summoning the spirits of Samuel Beckett and his theatre of the absurd, tinged with a hint of Andy Warholesque experimentality, Urbach delivers a forceful vision out of limited scenic elements and a mere split-screen by way of visual effect. A piece of mind-expanding beauty.
