We’re bringing Austrian producer and vierundvierzig label boss markmechanik to Peckham for an all-vinyl in-store set on Saturday 12th September, running 6–9pm at the shop. Free entry, and free beer on the night courtesy of Orbit Beers.
markmechanik runs vierundvierzig out of Salzburg – a non-profit “Klubkulturklub” set up to support contemporary music culture, with a particular focus on local, young and creative artists, and on nurturing and developing alternative and electronic music from the ground up. It’s a label with a genuine community mission behind it, and it shows in the music it puts out.
Earlier this year vierundvierzig released markmechanik’s new album, Invest in Rest – a record we’ve been playing in the shop since it landed and one we reviewed on the site back in March. It’s a collage-like, plunderphonic listen that moves between bass music, house and experimental electronics, built from dusty samples and dubby grooves that make it feel like it was lifted straight off an old record rather than made on a laptop.
Opening pieces “Acirfa” and “a Little bit of recording” set out its collage credentials with woozy vocal samples, “Borderland” folds in velvety bass, dub and a hint of ’90s TV drama, and “1984” layers drums and keys into something dense and, in the end, hopeful. It takes some sharp stylistic left turns along the way — echoes of early Eno and krautrock creep in too — but stays accessible throughout, and we reckon it’s one of the more vinyl-appropriate records to come out this year. Copies are in stock at the shop now.
For this in-store, markmechanik steps behind the decks for an all-vinyl set, so expect a proper dig through his own collection rather than a rundown of the album. Come down, have a free beer from Orbit Beer, and hear what a Salzburg label boss actually plays when he’s not making his own records.
