Andrew Morrison uses his numerous aliases to explore a sound he’s coined “tape throb”: deep, propulsive lo-fi house bangers beamed in from outer space. Readers may be familiar with his main projects The Cyclist and Buz Ludzha, but his most recent outlet, Indopan, has mined psychedelic, jazz-leaning terrain to great effect.
Following 2023’s ‘Yupana‘, Morrison delivers the project’s latest, ‘In Opulence’, via 100% Silk, “a 70-minute suite of jazzy kinetics, lysergic breaks, and dusted swing”. Along with last week’s Patioworld track premiere, set to release on the same day, ‘In Opulence’ conveys a mood of emerging from hibernation, breaking free of the grey tones of winter and embracing the new growth of spring and summer.
Our pick is “Shore Ellipsis”, featuring vocalist Elaine Howley. A hazy, kinetic slice of techno, the track soars on skittering beats, wobbly synths, and Howley’s ace vocals taking it to the next level. While it hews a little closer to some of Morrison’s work as The Cyclist, “Shore Ellipsis” ties in to the exploratory nature of ‘In Opulence‘ with its blissfully fried dance floor aesthetic perfectly suited for sunset rooftop parties.
In Opulence is scheduled for release on 4 April via 100% Silk. Order a cassette copy from Bandcamp.
