Premiere: Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri – In The Eastern Wild

Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri’s forthcoming collaborative album “Where Light Pauses in the Silence of the Sun“, via Black Knoll Editions, emerges from a three-day residency at Berlin’s Morphine Raum. There, performance and recording unfolded in tandem, without stage or separation, the record capturing a kind of porous, evolving immediacy. That openness carries into In The Eastern Wild, the album’s lead offering and a study in slow-building immersion.

Opening in near stillness, delicate string textures unfurl like light through mist. There’s a softness to the initial movements in the track, before, gradually, layers of synth begin to gather, washing over the arrangement in ever-widening arcs, each one deepening the sense of scale.

Around the halfway mark that low-end drone work, so ubiquitous with Mogard’s sound in particular, emerges; deep and pulsating, anchoring the track with a newfound weight. It’s here that Mogard and Irisarri’s control of tension becomes truly tangible. The piece expands inward, drawing the listener deeper into its sonic field.

The emotional register of subdued awe builds and builds as the layers accumulate, there’s a sense of something vast taking shape just out of reach, held in suspension, the listener at its very heart.

Where Light Pauses in the Silence of the Sun is scheduled for release on 26 June via Black Knoll Editions. Order a copy.
