Australian producer Alex Marsh is set to release ‘Trellis’, their eponymous debut after a series of albums under the Soda Lite moniker. The tape is being issued by California’s Not Not Fun, who partnered with Soda Lite on their mesmerising 2022 effort, ‘Aqua Solar Cura’.
Where the latter project incorporated field recordings, ranging from “commingling waterfowl to screeching Tasmanian Devils”, with bucolic ambient sounds showcasing “relationships to land”, ‘Trellis’ considers relationships to the mind. Marsh’s minimal sound palette is less chill out and more contemplative, intimate, and cerebral.
Today, we’re highlighting “Tawny Hour”, featuring a gorgeous interplay of piano and autoharp that slowly ushers in subtle keyboards and chimes. The elements flow together, branch off, and return, building off one another but drifting in an enticing manner that reflects the album’s improvisational structure. “Tawny Hour”, like the rest of ‘Trellis’, is a skilfully crafted piece of acoustic ambient, that unfolds at its own pace and uses its minimal instrumentation to create an inviting space that offers a rich environment that deepens with each listen.
‘Trellis’ is scheduled for release on 2 May via Not Not Fun. Order a cassette copy from Bandcamp.
