Gabrielle Washington has a reputation for expressive live performances. After relocating to New Orleans from Virginia in 2013, Washington started playing with Sexy Dex and the Fresh, co-fronting the group from 2014 onwards. The artist’s knack for colourful storytelling shines through on ‘New Growth’, a solo project under the moniker Delores Galore.
Covering synth pop, disco and house, the vibrant tones on ‘New Growth’ are hinted at through the artwork for this release, which inserts Washington into a geometric retro futurist landscape. The imagery is fitting given the personal narratives and eighties-leaning aesthetic of many of these tracks.
Our pick is ‘One Touch’, a fine slice of DIY synth pop that centers Washington’s vocal talents and the kind of lyrics you might expect from chart-topping hits. As with all the tracks on this release, the drums are provided by a trusty Roland 707 and accompanied by the unmistakable sound of the Juno 106 radiating sweet blissful nostalgia.
‘New Growth’ is scheduled for release 4 June via Acid Waxa. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
