Premiere: Euglossine – Chebyshev Poly

Florida composer Tristan Whitehill’s body of work encompasses music, digital art, music videos, and sound design for video games and podcasts. Under the Euglossine moniker, the Gainesville producer has spent the past decade-plus crafting experimental electronica that has been released on critical 2010s exploratory imprints such as Hausu Mountain, Orange Milk, and Rotifer. Where previous releases brought in influences ranging from video game soundtracks, Reflex-indebted IDM, new age, and midi jazz, the club-centric features come in focus while retaining a headphone-friendly techno tone on Whitehall’s latest long player.

Qualia’ is Euglossine’s first release with fellow Floridian club purveyors Image Research, the Tampa-based label run by Justin Myers (aka Justin Depth) and Hunter P. Thompson (aka Akasha System). The dense grooves veer between humid Daytona dub and Everglade funk, with an emphasis on immersive sonic world building found on the best video game OST.

“Chebyshev Poly”, our pick from the release, offers glitchy, hypnotic beats and dreamy synths perfectly suited for late night listening. It’s an intriguing slice of ambient techno that manoeuvres between clubby aesthetics and soundtrack pieces that set the mood for futuristic, altered state visuals. ‘Qualia’ invites listeners into an environment of ever-shifting sonic moods that, thanks to Whitehill’s rich compositions and sound design, congeal into a cohesive whole.

Qualia is out now via Image Research. Order a CD copy from Bandcamp.
