First heard on Gilles Peterson’s 2012-issued compilation, ‘Brownswood Electr*c 3‘, London-based producer Frank Rodas alias Matt Fear reignites the flame with his first solo EP, ‘The Sellout‘, brought to you by Glasgow’s ever reliable Optimo Music.
Having kept himself busy on many fronts, including the creation of his own label alongside Raf Trans, Out The Flat, inaugurated last year with a choice debut from Marcello Napoletano, Rodas is back with a vengeance, written and recorded over the last year in his home studio, and sure to delight lovers of outsider electronics and punishing machine funk with his signature blends of ruffneck breaks, doom-laden dystopian ambiences and rowdy electroid crackdowns, true-school fashion.
Our pick ‘Mandroid‘ takes us to a Asimovian ‘Foundation‘ cycle-like kind of sci-fi setting. A complex interlacing of spooky theremin-like notes, overpowering drone waves and cosmic bloops spin out of orbit for a strobes-lit rave ballet in outer space, as Rodas pulls out his fiercest knee-buckling moves. Showing off his top-range knack for meshing an enslaving melodic savoir-faire with high-protein floor dynamics, this one’s a melter for the body and mind in equal measure. Killer tune.
The Sellout EP is released via Optimo Music on 26th July, pre-order a copy from Boomkat.
