Premiere: Franz Scala – Saxon Rebel (feat. Local Suicide)

Berlin-based italo-disco record label Slow Motion mark their return with the full-length release ‘Cafe Futuro‘, the sophomore album from label boss Franz Scala.

Spanning nine tracks, the album feels like a nocturnal séance, where proto-electronic synthesis, heat-soaked new wave and percussive alchemy melt into one disorienting italo-disco fever dream. For the occasion, Scala invites collaborators including Furotica, Local Suicide, Acid Gymnastics and Scala’s studio partner Charlie.

Each track unfurl like neon-lit vignettes, where towering arpeggios spiral skyward, punctured by thundering snares and dubbed-out swirls. Beneath the surface lies an unspoken homage to Neukölln’s Café Futuro – a legendary Berlin outpost where Scala’s cosmic mania found fertile ground.

Our pick is the fifth track ‘Saxon Rebel’ – a sleek, hyper stylised descent into the nocturnal undercurrents of Northern Germany. Featuring Local Suicide, the track operates at a steady 120 BPM, maintaining an unflinching tension without ever rushing. Acid-washed synth lines snake through layers of gleaming new beat arpeggios, while Vamparela’s Greek spoken-word passages lend an air of ritualistic mystique. The result is a seductive time-warp, where fragments of ancient rites and sci-fi futures converge into an hallucinatory dancefloor reverie.

‘Cafe Futuro‘ is scheduled for release 20th August via Slow Motion. Order a copy.
