Premiere: Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet – Les ocres

French experimentalist Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet is set to release his first album in nearly four years. Following a pair of releases in 2020, ‘Stories concerning the heroes and rituals’ and ‘The Distant Murmur of the City’, ‘Les Alentours’ is his debut with California imprint Not Not Fun.

The album builds on previous experiments with soundscapes that utilise subtle, unhurried electro-acoustic tones. Clocking in at thirty minutes, ‘Les Alentours’ collects nine angular, adventurous ambient vignettes that makes excellent use of silence and space.

Our pick for today’s premiere is “Les ocres“, a spectral slice of experimental sound that builds a foggy, noir atmosphere. Working with a sparse set of keyboard effects and a plodding, metronomic beat that cuts out and returns sporadically, “Les ocres” casts an ethereal, hypnotic spell that’s hard to shake.

‘Les Alentours’ is scheduled for release on 3 May via Not Not Fun. Order a cassette copy from Bandcamp.
