After discreet beginnings marked by a handful of split releases gone fairly unnoticed back in 2013, German producer Marlon Hoffstadt threw himself entirely into the battle by founding Retrograde alongside fellow producer Natureboy Gold two years later. A turning point in Marlon’s career that came out on a stand-out solo debut, ‘Shattered‘, which paved the way to a string of collaborations with legendary Chicago vocalist Paris Brightledge, recently punctuated by a last hit on DJ Haus’ Hot Haus Recs featuring Vin Sol on remix duty.
Inaugurating a new project of his, the aptly-named label Midnight Themes, Hoffstadt establishes his territory somewhere between upper meditative spheres and full-on pragmatic body music. Our premiere, ‘Mutual Desire‘, is a well-rounded slab of chimey house rife with acidic flares, cottony pads and a driving, bouncy drum work to emphasize its breezy swing with further 4/4 impact. Brittle and crystalline, yet bendy as can be when the bass drops, this one’s geared towards nightly bohemians on the lookout for a safe dreamy haven. Score.
Midnight Themes 001 is released on 29th May, pre-order a vinyl copy from Bandcamp.
