For those who don’t know, Space were – in their original incarnation – a short-lived French cosmic disco act from the late 70’s. Phenomenally successful across four albums, before disbanding in 1981, they’ve been sampled from acts such as De La Soul and Talib Kweli, right up to – bizarrely – S Club Juniors.
‘Magic Fly‘, from their self-titled debut, was arguably one of their most iconic tracks, which now sees a variety of equally esoteric producers put it through the remix machine in order to contextualise it for modern, but still forward thinking dance floors. Stepping up to this challenge is Hacienda DJ Greg Wilson, ex-The Grid man Richard Norris, and Sare Havlicek with an extended re-edit.
However it was The Orb‘s remix that caught our attention, managing to retain the whimsy of the original while taking it into a much more hypnotic and churning interpretation. It is respectful, but provides a driving alternative that works wonderfully in context with the companions on the release.
Magic Fly (Remixes) is scheduled for release 20th April 2018, pre-order a copy from Red Eye Records.
