Gerry Read may only be 18 years of age, but after listening to his 2 track EP on Fourth Wave, most house connoisseurs would agree with me that Read’s beats have a distinct Detroit flavour, a flavour that for a 18 year old living in Suffolk’s historic market town of Bury St Edmunds, not Motown, may come as a shock.
When I first listened to this EP the one thing that I picked up on was Read’s production style, he employs a similar approach to what Jan Jelinek or Secondo AKA Radovan Scasascia would use, that is relentless usage of rolling loops. The first track ‘Untitled’ begins with a hyped up drum giving the track raw energy and rhythm, the chopped up male vocal gives the track soul, whilst the chords add that distinct Detroit tang. DJs take note, this track is guaranteed to liven up any mood.
On the flip, ‘Legs’ serves up a darker, grittier melody. A thumping bass line pushes the track along, whilst chopped up looped male and female vocals cause an almost tumbling effect. Overall Gerry Read has spliced together numerous samples and loops to create two house gems perfect for underground raves and dingy warehouses.
