Lina Filipovich: Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor

"Unpredictable rhythms of teasing techno are co-written with analog
synthesisers, sporadically rendering psychological thrill and turmoil"

Charcoal skies descend silk tapestries of glazing textures, and the mind roams freely in its wishful red-carpet-lined corridors. A Paris resident of Minsk origin turns exhilarating brain conjectures into a maze of haunting sounds for seekers of surreal dispositions.

We are talking Lina Filipovich. A visual artist with previous academics in fine arts and experimental electro-acoustics influences the nature of both these fields into her perceptions of club aesthetic to create sonic broodings of oneiric quality in ‘Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor‘, her debut record on the London-based record label Blank Mind.

Filipovich exhorts a humanised machine’s fragments of thought—at the hem, unpredictable rhythms of teasing techno are co-written with analog synthesisers, sporadically rendering psychological thrill and turmoil. Restless and unsettling, her sound trickles down the spine, sprouting gooseflesh on tender skin, paralleling the aftermath of a sweaty fever dream.

High and low frequencies squeak and tremble, a mixture of alienated cyber-synths and slow-dribble drum patterns squiggling together in ‘Catwalk‘, ‘Silver Ghost‘, and ‘999‘ – the energy is metaphysical. ‘Omqroid‘, ‘Dusty‘, and ‘Villain Dot‘ squelch with electricity, error-prone machine noise slashed and pieced, open ripe wormhole vortexes for wonky body movement, edging in the dark.

In a sense, the listening exercise of ‘Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor‘ advances theatrically in the ways of a looming background score to an opening of a Lynch-like pensive and stirring act. Filipovich swims on two ends of a spectrum on this one, adapting comfortably to the unease of the murk, twiddling sentiments tastefully decoded for a dance on a dancefloor to remember.

‘Music For An Imaginary Dancefloor’ is scheduled for release on 24th May via Blank Mind. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
