Following the release of Maarja Nuut & Ruum‘s 2018 debut album ‘Muunduja‘ via FatCat Records sub-label 130701, the Estonian duo mark their return this September with ‘World Inverted’ LP. To celebrate, we are premiering the music video for ‘Underneath There Is‘ – the fourth track from their genre-defying album.
Together Maarja Nuut & Ruum create music that traverses the liminal space between dance music and experimental pop, with the album careening from techno through to greyscale ambient, crowned with enchanting vocals that are reminiscent of haunted folk songs.
Throughout ‘World Inverted’ there is a strange sense of weightlessness and suspense, which makes itself felt more than heard; like an onset of déjà vu, it’s less of an acoustic style and more of a physical disconnect from the world. This is by no mistake — they describe their music as: “every power has its opposite, and each world has its own world inverted. Our aim is to place these two opposites in one body.”
‘Underneath There Is‘ balances both sides of the coin, the music stretches from thinly-stretched ambience through to a cinematic, yet crushingly heavy, conclusion. The music video moulds this energy into a slowly burning thriller plot, riding the crescendo from somewhat bleak pastoral scenes to frenetic flashes and explosions of light during the psychoactive conclusion.
