For all those who seek adventures in experimental music and visual art, the 19th edition of CTM Festival is about to take place in Berlin extending across 10 days and nights at various venues in the city. CTM’s programming ranges from live concerts and performances to non-stop club nights featuring artists including Celestial Trax, DAF, Elena Colombi, Rashad Becker, Recondite and a tonne more.
CTM’s 2018 theme, ‘Turmoil‘, builds on the insights of 2017’s ‘Fear Anger Love‘, and continues its inquiry into the potential of sound and music to invigorate resilience and awareness at a time when we have begun normalising the ongoing barrage of political, social, and environmental crises and the resulting disquiet that resonates through our on- and offline lives.
Uneasy times demand uneasy music – CTM 2018 explores the state of music and sound practice in the face of a confusing and critical present: What is the sound of turmoil? What are aesthetics of tumult? Which other sonic and musical responses could we conceive of to counter the current overload of agitation?
Another highlight will be delivered in 4D sound courtesy of the state of the art spatial sound studio MONOM at Funkhaus – a one of a kind instrument that immerses up to 400 people inside 48 omnidirectional speakers suspended throughout the venue, extending to 9 powerful subs submerged beneath an acoustically transparent floor. Pan Daijing and GAIKA are both set to perform at MONOM.
More than just a festival, CTM seeks to give impulses for artistic expression and political participation. Consequently the programme will be accompanied by talks, lectures and exhibitions.
