RVNG Intl. sub label Freedom To Spend have announced their latest release, a four-album dive into the catalogue of visionary 1980’s artist Robert Cox. Hailing from the coastal town of Felixstowe, Cox worked under the alias Rimarimba, forming a key part of a DIY tape-trading community that spanned continents and flourished upon the intersection of post-punk, industrial and minimalist music.

Cox’s idiosyncratic musical vocabulary is said to hinge upon a kind of hallucinatory minimalism, spun from an unbridled imagination and shot through with warm-hearted joy. Freedom To Spend are reissuing three of his albums, beginning with 1983’s ‘Below The Horizon‘, followed by 1984’s ‘On Dry Land‘ and 1985’s ‘In The Woods‘, alongside a new compilation of unreleased material, 1988’s ‘Light Metabolism Number Prague‘. Drawing on the work of minimalist luminaries Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Brian Eno, Cox created musical landscapes that live in “a fully contained world of trash and treasure, play and precocity.”

Freedom To Spend is an imprint focused on reissuing long-lost gems plucked from musical obscurity. The 2018 edition of 250 vinyl sets of all four Rimarimba albums will be the only opportunity to access ‘Light Metabolism Number Prague.’ Following that and through 2019, the other three albums will be made available independently, in a one-time edition of 750 copies. Each album features artwork reinterpreted from its original edition, and accompanying abstracts by Jon Dale.

The Rimarimba Collection is scheduled for release 21 September 2018 via Freedom To Spend. Order a copy here.
