This week’s episode of our sister mix series features a ruminative guest mix from Russian-born, New York-based artist Julia Govor.
Weaving a unique web of musical history, Govor initially started as a singer for a military band in the Soviet Union before eventually laying roots in New York, finding her sonic footing and inevitably becoming one of the most thoughtful and reliable techno DJs in the scene. In 2018, she established her Jujuka imprint, a multidisciplinary label that has aimed to share narratives about her own experience in the dance, both as an artist and a raver.
With her latest release, ‘Winter Mute‘ – Govor takes the tangled web of emotions, feelings and thoughts that she felt during the most isolating parts of the pandemic and wrenches a sonic journey that is intimately honest, inspiring and intensive.
Touching upon the works of Andrei Tarkovsky and William Gibson, Govor carefully threads the needle between these two distinct voices and knits a tapestry that’s worth reveling in its glory.
That same attention to detail is evident in her guest mix for Newtype Rhythms; as she seamlessly entwines tracks with efficiency and exuberance aplomb. Check out Julia’s guest mix at 41 minutes in, with resident Sheepshead warming things up per usual.
