Twenty-five years after its original release, Markus Guentner‘s landmark debut In Moll returns in a definitive 25th Anniversary Edition on Black Knoll Editions – and it’s now available to pre-order at Inverted Audio Record Store.
Originally released in 2001 during the formative years of Kompakt’s influential Pop Ambient series, In Moll remains one of that scene’s defining early statements: delicate melodic fragments, slow-moving harmonies, deep bass tones and extraordinary spatial depth, handled with an emotional immediacy and compositional restraint few records since have matched. For anyone who loves Basic Channel’s Radiance III or the GAS albums – that same balance of beauty and darkness – In Moll sits comfortably alongside them as essential listening for followers of primordial ambient and minimal dub techno alike.
The album followed Guentner’s contributions to the inaugural Kompakt Pop Ambient compilation, including the beloved Regensburg 1, named for his Bavarian hometown — recordings that immediately caught the ear of Kompakt founders Michael Mayer and Wolfgang Voigt. “We knew that we had found something outrageously beautiful,” Mayer recalls, “and we wanted the whole world to listen.” Voigt, reflecting on Guentner’s place in the label’s history, calls him “one of the first, but also one of the most important ambient artists” associated with Kompakt.
To mark the announcement, In Moll 4 has been released today as the first track from the anniversary edition – a piece omitted from the original vinyl pressing, now on wax for the first time. A new visual presentation accompanies the release, extending the album’s atmospheric world into the visual realm.
What sounded futuristic in 2001 now feels timeless. In Moll was the beginning of an artistic language that still echoes through contemporary ambient and experimental electronic music – and this reissue is the definitive way to experience it.
