Motion Ward are back with ‘High School Blues’ from Russian based 17 y.o. prodigy, ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ aka Nikolay Kozlov. The label has been busy recently and in April, exael & Arad Acid’s partnership on ‘Furi’ EP presented another gateway into a deepening spectrum of dubbed-out and idiosyncratic electronica.
‘Swoeks’ is a convexing and concaving track whose somewhat harsh clicks n’ cuts tussle with gentle melodies as semi-soft drums and organic field recordings twitch together. Woodwind keys chime and mercurial hi-hats shuffle with the synthtopia of self-generated sounds as it develops through an absorbing 6 minutes. If you’re into exael, Uon, Perila and OL then this is gonna be right up your proverbial Strasse.
Kozlov’s ‘High School Blues’ is not quite what you’d expect from someone this young. The music is mature, arrangement accomplished and each track has a real luxurious charm. His form of ambience has energy and rhythm and the free-styling embryonic characteristics of each track make it an ideal partner for all kinds of conditions: on the beach, chilling in the park, in the living room and, if possible in the near future, heard live on a huge sound system.
‘High School Blues’ is scheduled for release 1 May as a limited edition cassette. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
