Following up to a pair of VAs and another solo EP by the enigmatic R. Sensation, Italian label Raw Culture are back in full force and effect, ready to break 2017 in with their debut 12″ courtesy of French up-and-comer DJ Unrefined.
As his DJ alias suggests, Unrefined’s sound belongs to the coarse category with its abrasive blends of crusty drums and sooty synthlines. Constantly oscillating between rugged technoid tropes and shuffling house rhythms, the Frenchman carves out straight up muggy club ambiences, with Detroit’s very own Gari Romalis providing further sustained fire on the flip.
Our premiere, ‘The Basement‘, is a steady floor-dedicated sureshot. Built upon dissonant bass accents erupting as a jacking rhythm strafes its way through a passive-aggressive mashup of altered vox sample beats and dusty claps. A rough and tough late night melter, set to raise the heat beyond the par in all serenity.
