Premiere: Kovyazin D – Rage

*This premiere is part of our partnership with Craigie Knowes, offering a limited run of exclusive merchandise available to buy from Everpress.

Russian producer Dmitry Kovyazin aka Kovyazin D first appeared on my radar in January of this year when he turned in a dark-as-they-come record for the party-turned-label where he is a resident, System 108. That record was all gnarled and twisted acid coursing through rusted, core shaking rhythms. It was the type of record that you could imagine both Nicolas Lutz and Helena Hauff deploying at peak time.

And even if releasing a record like that in 2020 meant that we didn’t get the chance to hear it rattle any dark warehouses, that doesn’t mean Kovyazin has taken his foot off the gas. On his first solo outing for Craigie Knowes, Kovyazin D explores three different shades of foreboding EDM. “Headache” has a swaggering chug to it while “Minimum for Maximum” filters Italo melodies through some B-reel horror movies.

Our premiere, however, is the real pièce de ré·sis·tance, the not-so-subtly titled, “Rage.” A properly aggressive 4/4 rhythm and a venomous acid line are the focal elements of the track, but we even also get the full cinematic treatment: there is a cascade of nervous strings at the 4-minute mark and even the occasional effect that sounds just a little bit like screams. This is no-prisoner’s dance music at its finest.

‘Last August’ EP is scheduled for release 14 December via Craigie Knowes. Order a copy from Red Eye.
