Control Freak Recordings kick off their brand new white label series with a four-tracker from Syz, entitled ‘Bunzunkunzun‘ EP.
The London-based record label have long plied the trade of digging up pieces of fresh talent that fit into the ever-expanding puzzle of UK dance music, and with Brighton-based performer Syz they’ve found a suitable helmsman to open the gates to white label territories — a hallmark of UK dance culture.
Inescapably indebted to the swathe of dance music genres from the United Kingdom, the EP slaloms between UKG beats and UK Funky grooves, all woven together by a tight, modern approach that shows off the constant innovation emerging from the region.
‘Geometric‘ comes out as a clear highlight. Bouncing on a heavily swung beat, little glimmers of garage shine throughout, from the light foot work in the percussion to the fragments of vocals popping out of the mix. It’s not your run-of-the-mill UKG remodel, though: there’s a clear attention to detail in the fluctuating harmonics and rich, morphing basslines. File alongside the beat-heavy workouts from Lurka and Batu, and blend into your breakbeats to lighten the tone.
‘Bunzunkunzun’ is scheduled for release 4 December via Control Freak Recordings. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
