Each of them praised and celebrated for their excellent job at reissuing lost gems and sought-after records from more or less distant eras – from Patrick Cowley to Woo through Jah Wobble and Smersh, Dark Entries and Emotional Rescue teamed up this time to “further explore Psychic TV’s Acid House years” with Virginia’s ‘Blue Pyramid‘, a track originally released in 1988 via Temple Records now jazzed up with revamps from [Emotional] Especial affiliates Khidja, San Francisco’s Bézier as well as former Consolidated and Hercules & Love Affair member Mark Pistel.
Formed by none other than Dave ‘Mista Luv’ Ball, half of the world-famous Soft Cell duo responsible for the super hit ‘Tainted Love‘, and then-wife Virginia ‘Gini’ Ball, a classical violinist who toured and recorded with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Marc Almond, the short-lived duo here finds a much variegated echo to their rousing Arabic acid house tune, ‘Blue Pyramid‘.
Giving further presence to the Middle-Eastern spirit of the track all the while implementing a combined club-friendly swing, Khidja dish out a proper psychoactive slab of synth-heavy dance music adorned with a mazy assemblage of arpeggiated 303 bass, languid whammy riffs and subtly dubbed-out strings all geared toward massive dancefloor take-off halfway in. Lush desert vibes tinged with an ever tasty free-jazz state of mind blazing, the Bucharest duo sure got the knack for crafting equally propulsive and enveloping themes. Highly recommended listen.
Blue Pyramid is released via Dark Entries on 7th November, pre-order a copy from Juno.
The 12” is housed in a trippy, majorelle blue and purple die-cut sleeve with classic yellow Psychic TV skull label, all designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy also includes a 2-sided 6 x 6” square insert with a photograph by Fred Giannelli of the Emax disc for Blue Pyramid, and liner notes by Dave and Gini Ball.
