With its roots in L.A.’s DIY scene, California’s 100% Silk was originally conceived of as an outlet for experimental noise musicians exploring underground club rhythms. Over the years and out of the basements came a sleeker, no less independent interpretation of club music.
With an exceptional ear for acts that fit right into the label’s vibe, they’ve endured and evolved into a consistent distributor of dopamine-inducing house vibrations. The submissions grew from friends, acquaintances, and bandmates in Southern California, San Francisco, and New York to bedroom producers and club goers from across the globe, including the Pacific Northwest, Japan, and Malta.
Ahead of their 15th anniversary, the folks at 100% Silk HQ have assembled Late Shift Silk, a collection of tracks from a group of mostly new, and some familiar, names to the label. Label favourites such as Charles A.D. and Shine Grooves stand alongside new additions to the roster such as Warden and Dorosoto. The compilation is less a look in the rearview mirror than it is a map of the road ahead.
Japanese producer Yamaan may be familiar to listeners for a 2020 cassette release on Tokyo’s Dotei Records, as well as lush, ambient leaning hip hop as part of CHIYORI × YAMAAN. They kick off ‘Late Shift Silk’ with “Night Flight”, an appropriately low slung slice of airborne techno navigating smooth, star-filled skies. Yamaan’s sound is perfectly suited for night drives across empty, neon-kissed highways running down endless urban sprawl.
Late Shift Silk is scheduled for release on 5th December. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
