Premiere: Z Lovecraft – Verge Dub

Hailing from South East London, Z Lovecraft first emerged last year with a debut solo platter on No Bad Days, coupled with contributions to the likes of Rhythm Section International, Sofatalk and YAM Recordings. Firmly anchored in Peckham’s ever effervescent haven for fresh sounds, Mali Baden-Powell became a full-blown member of Bradley Zero’s RSI family, making a niche on the label as a creative producer and studio manager, as well as YAM, for which he works part-time.

Breaking 2018 in, the British producer steps up with the debut delivery of Guru Meditation, a new London-based imprint said to be “inspired by experimental electronics and computer music“. Due out tomorrow, ‘Verge EP‘ features three cuts “pinned by mellow breaks, nintendo sequencers and crystal chords – nicely pressurized with springy ambience“; blurring the lines between broken beat, dub techno, low-slung house and lounge. A much tasty mashup of colours and flavours.

Lifted from this brightly-hued, summer-ready package, our pick ‘Verge Dub‘ perfectly translates Z Lovecraft’s playful approach into a finespun assemblage of breezy breaks, obsessive piano loops and skittish drums and rimshots, steadily descending in dubby, FX-drenched depths as bars fly by. Right in line with the label’s motto, i.e. being “squarely aimed in the hazy zone between club records and home listening“, this cut’s a particularly compelling introduction into Baden-Powell’s equally enticing and retro-propulsive hybrid blends. Experience the beauty of the higher worlds.

Verge EP is released via Guru Meditation on July 6th, pre-order a copy from Bandcamp.
