Axel Willner is back. After eight years of near-silence under his The Field alias, the Swedish producer has announced Now You Exist, a five-track EP available now for pre-order in our store – and his first release on Studio Barnhus.
For those who have followed Willner since we interviewed him in 2011, around the release of Looping State Of Mind, this is a moment worth marking. Loops, he told us back then, play tricks on the mind – and that’s precisely what he wants to achieve. If it’s something familiar that you can’t quite put your finger on, even better. That restless, elusive quality has always been the engine of The Field, and if Now You Exist picks up where he left off, it promises to be as disorienting and absorbing as anything in his catalogue.
His productions have long demonstrated the power a perfectly-hewn phrase of music gains through repetition – subtle alterations resulting in songs that are at once static and propulsive, locking like jammed machinery yet moving inexorably forwards. On Now You Exist, that architecture is said to return to the terrain of his seminal debut From Here We Go Sublime, but with a looseness and breathing room that feels distinctly new – and distinctly at home on Studio Barnhus, the Stockholm label run by Kornél Kovács, Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman.
It is a pairing that few would have predicted, but makes a certain intuitive sense. Willner has always maintained that his music reflects state of mind above all else – and whatever state of mind produced this record, it has carried him somewhere new.
