New Look

We caught up with the New York/Berlin based Canadian husband-and-wife duo New Look whilst on their mini-European tour in London.

After attending their intimate gig at The Box in Soho, I got chatting to Adam Pavao and Sarah Ruba upon the rooftop of London’s most notorious venue. We discussed their performance, future music and what they had planned on their agenda. A quick trip to Amsterdam for a gig at club Paradiso, then back to London for Annie Mac’s show at Koko, ending up with a trip to Paris before heading back to Canada. Fortunately Adam and Sarah gave us some of their time for this video interview and photo-shoot.

If you haven’t heard their eponymous debut album yet, then prepare yourself for an understated, elegant listen. Sleek, punchy analogue tracks that open up like flowers, iridescently imploring you to the light. Layer upon layer of shifting constants, gloriously soft bass skitters and misty full-fat synth affairs. Sarah’s voice soars; a melancholy arc flirting between otherworldly to pillowtalk in the reassuring blink of an eye.

In the interview we uncover their love for Marvin Gaye and how he helped inspire their current musical output. We discuss their move to New York as well as their relationship with its music scene. We also discuss their debut album ‘New Look’ and how they approached writing the album over the past five years as well as their musical setup.
