This week’s episode of our sister mix series Newtype Rhythms arrives unglued at the seams courtesy of NYC artist Despina.
Fresh off two releases on the burgeoning Kindergarten label (headed by previous Newtype Rhythms guest Ma Sha Ru) as well as an appearance on London imprint Shubzin’s latest compilation – the ascending course of this hyperkinetic up-and-comer is skyrocketing to parts unknown in the not-too-distant future.
Despina’s distinctive focus on the penetrable balance between intimacy and digital futures is evident in their music, a constant plug-and-play scenario vying for the answers to questions that can remain unanswered on a hard drive, but may prove to be fruitful in-person.
That thematic intensity is explored in their guest mix for Newtype Rhythms; surrounded by a trove of deconstructive club sounds that border the genres of breakbeat, funky, house, hyper-pop, techno and beyond.
