November 89 – the inaugural chapter of GAS – is finally available on wax for the first time. Comprising some of Wolfgang Voigt’s earliest recordings as GAS, some dating back to the late 1980s, the album was originally released in 2008 as a CD insert in the art book ‘Wolfgang Voigt GAS’ on Raster-Noton. Its arrival on Kompakt now effectively completes the GAS discography, adding the “first” album to a body of work long understood as one of electronic music’s most singular achievements.
These are early precursors – not yet the fully realised body of work, with its hypnotically focused forest imagery and abstract, psychedelic wash of alphorn and bass drum, but already pointing unmistakably in that direction. The dense forest atmosphere is present, the slowly evolving harmonic textures already moving with the patience and depth that would come to define the music of GAS.
For anyone who has spent time with Zauberberg, Pop or Königsforst, November 89 fills a gap that has existed since those records first appeared. Der Wald, Das Moor, Nah Und Fern – the titles alone carry the same wordless gravity. The title track, arriving two-thirds of the way through the A-side, is less a centrepiece than a coordinate: a marker from which everything else in the GAS story can be triangulated.
November 89 is scheduled for release in July 2026 via Kompakt. Listen to and Pre-order from Inverted Audio Record Store.
