Kokong Festival brings experimental electronics back to Åland’s geodesic dome

Returning to the Åland Islands between 31 July and 1 August, Kokong brings together an adventurous programme of experimental electronic and electroacoustic music, continuing its mission of promoting local creativity alongside artists from across Europe.

Founded by a collective of enthusiasts dedicated to spotlighting electronic music on the archipelago, Kokong has steadily grown into one of the Nordic region’s most distinctive independent festivals. Part listening experience and part cultural gathering, the event incorporates live electronics with performance art and movement, nurturing an environment where disciplines naturally overlap.

The first names confirmed for this year’s edition include Dutch sound designer Nadia Struiwigh, Swedish producer Daniel Savio, Finnish techno veteran Samuli Kemppi, Italian experimental artist Simone Ghetti, no-nonsense house and techno purveyor DJ Aleksi and the enigmatic archive diggers Svenska Discokyrkan, with further additions to the programme still to come.

Kokong’s striking transparent dome once again provides the festival’s centrepiece, encouraging audience and environment to exist in a kind of dialogue with each other. Ambient works, electroacoustic performances and rhythmic live sets all take on a different character as daylight fades across the surrounding landscape, an emphasis on place, not just programme, at the heart of the festival’s identity.

That philosophy extends beyond the music itself. Kokong wasn’t created simply to host international artists, but to cultivate Åland’s own electronic community by creating opportunities for collaboration and experimentation. Each edition brings visiting musicians together with local practitioners, strengthening the island’s creative scene while introducing audiences to new perspectives.

Set between Sweden and Finland in the Baltic Sea, Åland has quietly developed a reputation for intimate cultural events that favour curiosity over scale. Kokong embodies that spirit, offering a carefully curated weekend where exploratory electronic music meets remarkable surroundings in one of Northern Europe’s most distinctive festival settings.
