Monolake ‘Interstate’ receives first-ever vinyl pressing on Field Records

First released in 1999 via Imbalance Computer Music on CD format, Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles’ final full collaboration as Monolake is being released on vinyl for the first time, courtesy of Field Records.

Continuing their faithful documentation and reissuing of the Monolake back catalogue, Field Records now turn their attention to Interstate — a fully remastered 2×12″ edition of one of the most distinctive records in the duo’s discography. Where their debut Hongkong drew on field recordings captured at an international computer music conference to bind its tracks into a fluid whole, Interstate finds Henke and Behles pushing their exploration of Max/MSP into genuinely new territory — yielding a kaleidoscopic lattice of micro-rhythms and eight distinct ecosystems of sound, each one its own world.

After Interstate, Behles departed to focus entirely on the development of Ableton Live, making this not only a landmark record but an unrepeatable document of a specific moment in digital music history — one that still sounds wildly futuristic 27 years on.

To mark the occasion, today we present the premiere of “Tangent II” — one of two low-end-driven centrepieces from the album. Its dub techno undulation threads through layers of glitchy electronics and vaporous atmospheres across nine low-slung minutes, sounding as fresh today as it did 27 years ago.

Interstate is scheduled for release on the 19th June via Field Records. Listen and buy from Inverted Audio Record Store.
