Following the release of ASA 808‘s deeply emotive and personal album ‘Boy, crush‘ in 2022, today we premiere a simmering techno trip from the Berlin-based party starter and non-binary producer.
Powered by an unwavering affection for electronic music, ranging from sun-bleached electronica, ambient, breakbeat, house and UK Garage, Ansgar Rudolf began releasing music as ASA 808 in 2014 on Yarn Audio, then on George FitzGerald’s ManMakeMusic in 2015 and launched their own collective and label TOYS in 2016.
Now with 10 records under their belt, the queer positive collective steps up to deliver their first label compilation featuring five DJ tools from like-minded producers and collaborators; 2XM, DAEDE, Small Car NRG and Dark Sky. Mastered by none other than Moomin, ‘SOMA‘ is said to be about how each and every body should be seen as a site of empowerment and self-expression, rather than as an object of control or domination.
Fuelled by an insatiable energy, ‘SOMA‘ is tribal techno for the loose hours. Everything is right in front of you, the emotion is propulsive and the energy is palpable. Oscillating wood blocks, 909 cymbals and a fervently pumping bass line creates a potent club weapon that is surefire to drive limbs akimbo.
For those that are in Berlin, be sure to attend TOYS Soliparty at ://about blank on Friday 17 March with Tereza, Stimming (live), Slim Soledad, Redshape (live) and Moomin. All proceeds go to Medico International (who are offering emergency relief after the earthquake in Turkey & Syria) and the Woman* Life Freedom Collective (who support the feminist Iranian opposition and diaspora through events, resources and demonstrations).
‘DJ TOYS #01’ is scheduled for release on 24 March via TOYS. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
