Following a well received album on Good Morning Tapes in 2022, Finnish multi-instrumentalist Simo Hakalisto, aka Shakali, returns with ‘Rihmastossa‘, a heady blend of acoustic instrumentation and Fourth World atmospherics.
The album is being released by California label Not Not Fun, and the artist’s “surreal terrariums of strings, synthetics, wood, and wind” can be cataloged in between the storybook exotica of X.Y.R. and the anthropological mythos of American producer Wave Temples.
On deck for today’s premiere is the title track, “Rihmastossa“, a bubbling melange of percussion, synthesized field recordings, and subtle woodwinds. Shakali crafts a world that feels lived in and dusted over by time. It is less a staid museum exhibit and more a vibrant reflection of Hakalisto’s electro-acoustic intuitions. “Rihmastossa“, and the rest of the album, are gorgeous sonic travelogues from a time that doesn’t exist.
